Does Google Maps Work in Korea? What Tourists Should Use Instead

Korea changed the rules in 2026. But that does not mean you should land with only one map app. Google Maps is changing in Korea. Here’s what first-time travelers should know—and why NAVER Map is still worth installing before you fly.

The App You Trust Everywhere Suddenly Feels Different

Then you open the same app you use in London, New York, Paris or Bangkok: Google Maps.

You search for your hotel.

The hotel appears. Reviews appear. Photos appear. You know exactly where it is.

And then comes the question that has confused international visitors to Korea for years:

“Wait… why does Google Maps feel different here?”

For a long time, there was a very specific reason. South Korea restricted the overseas transfer of detailed national map data, which limited Google's ability to provide the kind of full navigation service travelers were accustomed to elsewhere. But on February 27, 2026, the Korean government conditionally approved Google's request to export 1:5,000-scale map data under security requirements.

That means the old advice — “Google Maps simply does not work in Korea” — is becoming outdated.

But there is an equally important warning:

Do not interpret that as “I only need Google Maps now.”

For a first trip to Korea, the safer strategy is still to arrive with a Korean mapping app installed as your primary or backup navigation tool.

Google Maps Wasn't Broken. Korea's Map Rules Were Different.

The strange Google Maps experience in Korea was never simply a case of bad GPS.

For years, Google argued that it needed access to detailed Korean map data through its global infrastructure to provide full navigation. South Korea, meanwhile, restricted exports of detailed geographic data because of national-security concerns involving military and other sensitive facilities.

Then the rules changed.

In February 2026, South Korea conditionally approved Google's request. The conditions include security processing for sensitive facilities, restrictions involving coordinates, domestic processing of the original data, and government review before permitted navigation-related data can be transferred abroad.

Think of it this way:

The door has opened.

That does not necessarily mean every Google Maps feature became identical to New York or London overnight.

The policy decision enables better Google Maps navigation in Korea, but rollout and product implementation are a separate issue. In May 2026, a Google Maps Community product expert noted that Google had not yet announced a Korean navigation launch date.

The App I Would Install Before Flying: NAVER Map

NAVER also provides translation for place reviews and has published multilingual usage guides specifically for international visitors.

And there has been a significant 2026 improvement.

Since June 2026, foreign visitors can use passport-based verification for certain NAVER services without needing a Korean mobile-phone number, opening access to functions including bookings, orders and payments through NAVER's ecosystem.

That matters because the hardest part of Korean travel is often not finding a famous attraction.

It is finding the small restaurant around the corner, the correct building entrance, the bus stop you actually need, or the cafe your Korean friend sent you.

This is where local mapping data becomes valuable.

What About KakaoMap?

NAVER Map is not the only local option.

KakaoMap provides route finding for public transportation, driving, walking and cycling, and Kakao says its map information is updated using recent local data. It also provides features such as public-transit boarding and alighting notifications.

Kakao has also been working more directly on foreign-traveler services. Its 2025 Kakao Travel Pack promoted KakaoMap together with KakaoTalk and K.ride, and specifically highlighted restaurant and place discovery plus real-time subway and bus location information.

For many tourists, however, installing Google Maps + NAVER Map is enough for the first day.

Google Maps remains useful for familiarity, saved places, internationally generated reviews and planning.

NAVER Map becomes the local navigation tool.

KakaoMap is a strong additional option if you want another Korean map ecosystem or already use other Kakao services.

The goal is not to decide which company has the “best map on Earth.”

The goal is much simpler:

Don't get lost on your first afternoon in Seoul because you arrived with only one option.

The Smartest Setup Takes Five Minutes Before Your Flight

Do this before boarding the plane.

Install your preferred Korean map app while you still have reliable internet. Change the interface to English if needed, then search for your hotel and confirm that you can find it.

Next, save your hotel address in both English and Korean when possible.

Then save three places:

Incheon Airport → Your Hotel → Your First Destination

That first destination could be Gyeongbokgung Palace, Myeongdong, Hongdae, a restaurant or even the convenience store near your hotel.

The point is not to plan your entire vacation.

The point is to eliminate the first three moments when you are tired, carrying luggage and wondering whether you are walking in the correct direction.

So, Does Google Maps Work in Korea?

Yes — but the answer in 2026 is more complicated than it used to be.

South Korea has made the major regulatory change that could allow Google Maps to provide much more complete navigation than in the past.

At the same time, Korea's own map platforms remain deeply integrated with local transportation and place information, and the Korea Tourism Organization was still explicitly recommending NAVER Map to international travelers in its May 2026 transportation-app guide.

Keep Google Maps.
